Citations

In this guide, you’ll learn about the Citations view in the AI Visibility tool of Moz Pro.

AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and AI Mode use supporting sources when generating responses. These supporting sources are often cited as links to the pages where the information is found. Knowing what citations are being used is important because it shows which websites and domains the model relies on when answering prompts.

The Citations tab view of the AI Visibility tool lists all the domains and pages cited by LLMs for the AI-generated response to your tracked prompts. Use this information to get a better understanding of how LLMs are learning about your brand or industry, to identify digital PR opportunities, and to optimize your brand outreach strategies.

To access your Citations data:

1. Click AI Research in the left-hand navigation menu
2. Click AI Visibility
3. Select your Dashboard
4. Click Citations from the top navigation

The Total Citations module provides an overview of all citations across your tracked prompts. Think of it as a snapshot of your citations data.

This includes the following data points:

1. Total citations - The total number of citations across all your tracked prompts.
2. Unique pages - The number of unique pages cited across all your tracked prompts.
3. Domains - The number of unique domains cited across your tracked prompts. If more than one page is cited from a single domain, that domain will only be counted once.
4. Your domain cited - The number of times your domain is cited across your tracked prompts. Please note: if you have not set up domain tracking for your AI Visiblity dashboard, you will see the option to Set up a domain. Click the link provided to add a domain to your Dashboard settings.

The Domain Authority Landscape module provides a breakdown of Domain Authority across all the cited domains for your tracked prompts.

Hover over any bar in the graph to see more information. You can also see the Average DA Score of the cited domains on the bottom right. 

Domain Authority is a Moz proprietary metric from 1-100 that predicts how well a domain will rank in Google based on a machine learning algorithm of link metrics.

The Spam Score Landscape module provides a breakdown of Spam Score across all the cited domains for your tracked prompts.

Hover over any bar in the graph to see more information. You can also see the Average Spam Score of the cited domains on the bottom right.

Spam Score represents the percentage of sites with similar features to the site you’re researching, which we've found to be penalized or banned by Google.

• A score of 1%-30% is considered a Low Spam Score.
• A score of 31%-60% is considered a Medium Spam Score.
• A score of 61%-100% is considered a High Spam Score.

Below the overview modules, you will see the full list of Citations for your tracked prompts. The default view here is Cited Domains with the option to view Cited Pages.

The Cited Domains table includes the following:

1. Domains - The domain being cited.
2. Citations - The number of times this domain is cited in the responses to your tracked prompts.
3. DA Score - The Domain Authority for this domain. Domain Authority is a Moz proprietary metric from 1-100 that predicts how well a domain will rank in Google based on a machine learning algorithm of link metrics.
4. Spam Score - The Spam Score for this domain. Spam Score represents the percentage of sites with similar features we've found to be penalized or banned by Google. This does not mean that the site is spammy. It’s best to use this as a guide to potentially spammy sites for further investigation.
5. Linking Domains - The number of domains that link to this domain. Two links from the same website will be counted as a single linking root domain.
6. More about this domain - Click View Detail to see more information about the citations and prompts associated with this domain.

Click View detail in the last column of the table to see the number of unique pages cited from the domain listed and the total number of times this domain is cited across all your tracked prompts. 

This view will also show you the list of unique pages cited. Click the Citations count to see the actual prompts citing this page.

Below the overview modules, you will see the full list of Citations for your tracked prompts. The default view here is Cited Domains with the option to view Cited Pages.

Use the drop-down to select whether you view All cited pages, Pages where only your brand is mentioned, or Pages where your brand is NOT mentioned. The option to view pages where your brand is not mentioned can help you identify opportunities for outreach and digital PR.

1. Pages - The page being cited with the title and URL listed. <> Cited in Prompts - The number of times this page is cited in the responses to your tracked prompts.
2. PA Score - The Page Authority for this domain. Page Authority is a Moz proprietary metric from 1-100 that predicts how well a page will rank in Google based on a machine learning algorithm of link metrics.
3. Spam Score - The Spam Score for this domain. Spam Score represents the percentage of sites with similar features we've found to be penalized or banned by Google. This does not mean that the site is spammy. It’s best to use this as a guide to potentially spammy sites for further investigation.
4. Linking Pages - The number of pages that link to this page.

Click any row in the Cited Pages table to see the number of prompt responses citing this page and the actual prompt responses associated with it. 

To export your Citations data, click Export from the top right of the table.
